tRANSITIONAL TRANSFORMATION - CHAPPAQUA, NY
The existing ranch house lacked character and profile from the outside. The owners wanted to give more prominence to the outside of the house. To do this, the house was given a complete face lift. The roof line was completely rebuilt. A large gable roof was built over the family room to give the house a substantial presence. A smaller gable roof was built over the entry to provide significance to the front door. The entry was opened to create a wider and grander threshold. Depth and dimension were added to the elevations using large brackets and columns, which support deep roof overhangs. Cedar siding and roof shingles were installed to give more elegance and timelessness to the exterior. The space of the existing garage was converted into living space as a family room and breakfast room. A new garage was constructed on the left side of the house with a mudroom and laundry room adjacent to the expanded living space.
The owners had a strict budget that they did not want the project to exceed. The original proposed renovation was bid higher than the budget. During the design process, we needed to come up with a design that kept the integrity of the proposed character and spaces and kept the cost down.
We decided to keep the character of the outside of the house and the public spaces. Instead of finishing the space that was added to the second floor by changing the roof lines, the attic was left unfinished, but framed in a way to accommodate the potential to finish the space at a later time.
While keeping within a set budget and footprint, a substantial amount of character was added to the exterior of the house. The house is now elegant and inviting. Prior to the renovation, the house seemed dated and insignificant. High quality materials and rhythmic use of elements give a timelessness to the exterior of the house. The clients are thrilled with the character of the house and how much a new roof line and materials were able to add to their existing space.
